Apakah planet ini sebaiknya disebut "Jupiter" atau "Yupiter" ya? Saya coba melakukan pencarian di situs fiskanet@LIPI, dua-duanya digunakan, namun Jupiter lebih banyak digunakan - sekitar dua kali (sekitar 400 vs 200). Bagaimana menurut wikiwan/ti lainnya? Bukankah sistem penulisan alfabet latin kita adalah warisan dari Bahasa Belanda? Ingat Jacob -> Yakub, Jehovah -> Yehovah, Jordan -> Yordania. Lagian, pada Bahasa Belanda sendiri, Jupiter dilafalkan Yupiter. Jadi, kalau kita konsisten, mestinya "Yupiter". wic2020^bicara 01:44, 26 Agustus 2006 (UTC)

Bukankah banyak juga bahasa "warisan" Belanda itu juga banyak yang tetap ditulis 'J' dan dilafalkan 'J' seperti contohnya : Januari bukan 'Yanuari', Juni bukan 'Yuni', Juli bukan 'Yuli' dan Jas bukan 'Yas'. Jadi Jupiter bisa saja diturunkan menjadi Jupiter dan bukannya 'Yupiter' dan mengingat Jupiter jauh lebih populer dibandingkan Yupiter apa tidak lebih baik kita menggunakan Jupiter saja. Sebagai tambahan komunitas astronomi Indonesia lebih banyak menggunakan kata Jupiter sebagai contoh: di beberapa situs astronomi Indonesia [1], [2] tidak dijumpai kata Yupiter tetapi konsisten menggunakan Jupiter. Entri yang ada di KBBI adalah Yupiter. Tapi memang untuk kata-kata dari suatu ranah pengetahuan tertentu, dalam hal ini astronomi, sebaiknya mengikuti kebiasaan atau istilah yang berlaku di lingkungan tersebut. Mungkin ada baiknya minta pendapat dari ahli bahasa atau ahli astronomi, spesifik mengenai mana yang benar: Jupiter atau Yupiter. Mungkin perlu diperhatikan juga asal paling mula kata ini muncul. Dalam Bahasa Latin, bahasa Kekaisaran Romawi, di mana kata ini muncul pertama kali untuk menyebut bapaknya para dewa, ditulis sebagai Iuppiter. Saya lebih condong untuk menyebutnya sebagai Yupiter, turunan dari bahasa Latin dan bukan dari Bahasa Belanda atau Inggris. Memang peranan planet ini semakin penting mengingat dia menjadi planet tipikal raksasa gas yang digunakan sebagai pembanding untuk planet-planet luar surya. Massa planet-planet raksasa gas luar surya seringkali dinyatakan dalam M_J (massa Jupiter). Tetapi karena Yupiter sudah menjadi "milik umum" dan tidak lagi eksklusif "milik astronomi", maka sebaiknya kita mengikuti KBBI sebagai istilah yang sudah resmi menjadi istilah serapan. geboy (bicara) 07:43, 31 Maret 2009 (UTC)

Nampaknya kata-kata pungutan berawal 'j' dari bahasa Belanda yang bersifat umum dilafazkan sebagai 'j' dan bukan 'y'. Sebab sejatinya dalam bahasa Melayu, bunyi y tidak muncul pada posisi awal. Oleh sebab itu kata-kata pungutan, tidak hanya dari bahasa Belanda tetapi misalkan juga dari bahasa Sanskerta seperti jantera asli yantra dan jasa dari yasa. Itu kan khusus untuk nama-nama Alkitab, mungkin gereja ada panduan khusus untuk hal ini. Tapi tidak untuk yang umum, dan Jupiter/Yupiter saya rasa tidak ada panduan dari gerejanya. Walaupun dalam kenyataan sehari-hari banyak juga orang yang tetap menggunakan Jacob, Josef dan Johannes. Lalu bahasa Belanda menurunkannya dari mana, mas? :D NB: Saya menggunakan contoh-contoh itu karena memang kebudayan Latin kan saling mempengaruhi dengan kekristenan. Kalau nama-nama Latin non-Alkitab juga banya, misalnya Josephus->Yosephus, Justin/Justinus->Yustinus (latinnya Iustinus), beberapa tokoh Eropa bernama Johanes->Yohanes (latinnya Ioannes), dan Johann->Yohan, Julius->Yulius. Yang tidak dijadikan "Y" juga ada, macam Jerome->Hieronimus (dari latin Hieronymus) 03:42, 8 April 2009 (UTC) penurunan istilah mungkin mesti menurut bahasa terakhir apa yang kita pakai sebagai penueurn, saya kasih contoh yang disebutkan diatas.. sebagai conteh josef diturunkan jadi yusuf, apa benar bahasa indonesia menurunkan langsung dari bahasa Latin? saya rasa tidak. Bahasa asalnya adalah bahasa Ibrani, kemudian diturunkan oleh bahasa arab dan bahasa indonesia menurunkan dari bahasa arab, bukan dari bahasa ibrani atau apalagi bahasa latin. jadi lebih baik hati-hati untuk mengklaim suat kata diturunkan dari bahasa ini atau itu.. kita liat yang paling real saja, Bahasa Belanda, apa ia menurunkannya dari Latin atau dari bahasa Indo Jerman lainnnya atau mungkin langsung dari bahsa romawi kuno. Bahwa KBBI menggunakan istilah Yupiter pastilah ada proses. Bahwa istilah Jupiter lebih banyak dipakai oleh para komunitas astronomi juga bukan berarti itu adalah istilah yang tepat. Rekan-rekan di komunitas astronomi saya kira lebih mencari hal praktis saja. Seingat saya, waktu saya kecil, ada buku Pustaka Time Life dengan judul "Bintang dan Planet" dengan pemeriksa (atau penerjemah?) Bambang Hidayat, menyebutnya sebagai Yupiter (sayang saya tidak memiliki bukunya. Jika ada wikipediawan/wati yang masih memiliki mohon dapat diperiksa).
