Majalah Jepang pertama diterbitkan di Jepang pada Oktober 1867.[1] Majalah bernama Seiyo-Zasshi (berarti Western Magazine dalam bahasa Inggris) didirikan dan diterbitkan hingga September 1869 oleh Shunzo Yanagawa, seorang sarjana Jepang.[1] Pada tahun 1940 terdapat hampir 3.000 majalah di negara tersebut.[2] Setelah Perang Dunia II jumlah majalah meningkat secara signifikan.[3] Pada akhir 2011 terdapat 3.376 majalah di negara tersebut.[4]
