Edgar Degas (19 Juli 1834 – 27 September 1917), terlahir sebagai Hilaire-Germain-Edgar De Gas (ilɛʀ ʒɛʁmɛ̃ ɛdɡɑʀ dœˈɡɑ), adalah seorang pelukis dan pematung dari Prancis. Ia dianggap sebagai pendiri impresionisme meskipun menolak istilah itu, dan lebih memilih disebut realis. Sebagai juru gambar berbakat, ia banyak dikenal dengan subyek tari, dan hampir separuh karyanya menggambarkan penari. Hal tersebut menunjukkan keahliannya dalam penggambaran gerakan, juga subyek perlombaan dan wanita telanjang. Potretnya dikenal akan kompleksitas psikologisnya dan penggambaran isolasi manusia.

La Classe de Danse (1875)

Di awal kariernya, ambisinya adalah menjadi pelukis bersejarah, panggilan yang untuk itu ia mempersiapkan diri dengan pendidikan akademik yang ketat dan belajar seni klasik secara dekat. Pada awal usia 30-an, ia berubah pikiran, dan dengan menjalankan metode tradisional pelukis bersejarah dengan menampilkan masalah subyek kontemporer, ia menjadi pelukis klasik zaman modern.
