Epica adalah grup musik beraliran Symphonic metal dari Belanda. Didirikan pada tahun 2002 oleh Mark Jansen.

Biografi

Pada awal 2002, Mark Jansen meninggalkan dari band After Forever karena perbedaan pendapat. Dia kemudian mulai mencari musisi yang akan bekerja untuk jenis musik yang lebih klasik atau symphonic. Band ini awalnya bernama "Sahara Dust". Pada akhir 2002, masuklah Helena Michaelsen(dari Trail of Tears) sebagai vokalis, tetapi tak lama ia digantikan oleh penyanyi berkarakter mezzo-soprano yaitu Simone Simons. Nama itu kemudian diubah menjadi Epica, yang diambil dari nama album eponymous Kamelot.
