Phyllis Nan Sortain "Primrose" Pechey (26 Februari 1909 - 27 Desember 1994), atau lebih dikenal sebagai Fanny Cradock, adalah seorang kritikus restoran, koki, dan juga penulis yang sering muncul di acara televisi, demo masak, dan media cetak bersama Mayor Johnnie Cradock yang berperan sebagai suami yang agak kikuk.

Kehidupan awal

Latar belakang keluarga Cradock adalah pedagang kelas menengah yang terpandang. Nenek moyangnya merupakan keluarga Pechey (pedagang jagung dan anggota gereja), keluarga Vallentine (produsen minuman keras) dan keluarga Hulbert (pembuat lemari). Cradock adalah anak dari novelis dan penulis lirik, Archibald Thomas Pechey, dan Bijou Sortain Hancock.

Cradock dilahirkan di rumah orang tua ibunya di 33 Fairlop Road, Leytonstone. Kelahirannya didaftarkan di London, di daerah West Ham.

Sweaktu kecil, Cradock tinggal bersama keluarganya di Fairlop Road, bersama kakek dan neneknya dari pihak sang ibu. Sebuah plakat yang menyebutkan namanya (dengan salah ketik) terdapat di Fairwood Court, Fairlop Road, London E11, yang beruliskan: "Fanny Craddock 1909–1994. Di tempat ini hinggal 1930 berdiri sebuah rumah bernama Apthorp, tempat lahir dari juru masak televisi yang terkenal Fanny Craddock, lahir dengan nama Phyllis Pechey."

Nama rumah tempat ia dilahirkan diambila dari Apthorp Villa, di Weston, Somerset, di mana kakeknya, Charles Hancock, dilahirkan. Orang tua Cradock tidak dapat mengelola uang mereka dengan baik; ibunya, Bijou, sangat boros, dan ayahnya, Archibald, memiliki banyak utang dari berjudi, sebagian besar di Nice. Untuk menghindari kreditornya, keluarga mereka berpindah-pindah keliling Inggris, mulai dari Herne Bay di Kent, kemudian ke Swanage di Dorset dan lalu ke Bournemouth di Dorset. Kemudian pada 1930, Archibald datang ke pengadilan kebangkrutan Norfolk dengan utang sebesar £3,500. Cradock memulai 10 tahun berikutnya dengan kemiskinan dan dengan berjualan produk kebersihan dari rumah ke rumah. Ia kemudian bekerja di toko pembuat gaun.

Karier kuliner

Nasib Cradock mulai berubah ketika ia bekerja di beberapa restoran dan dikenalkan dengan karya-karya dari Auguste Escoffier. Ia kemudian menulis dengan penuh antusiasme tentang perubahan dari "servis ala Prancis" ke "servis ala Russia" dan menyebut Escoffier sebagai juru selamat masakan Inggris.

Fanny dan Johnnie Cradock mulai menulis kolom dengan nama samaran "Bon Viveur" yang muncul di The Daily Telegraph dari 1950 hingga 1955. Ini kemudian membawanya ke karier di theater, di mana pasangan ini mengubah theater menjadi restoran. Cradock memasak banyak makanan yang kemudian disajikan ke penonton. Mereka kemudian menjadi terkenal karena kalkun panggangnya, lengkap dengan kepala beserta isiannya, bulu ekor dan sayap.
