- Kenapa menggunakan "k", sebab setau saya setiap kata serapan ke dalam Bahasa Indonesia disesuaikan dalam konsonan yang ada dalam bahasa Indonesia... konsonan dalam bahasa Indonesia cuma mengenal a..z ditambah ng,ny dan sy. Konsonan 'rk' tidak dikenal dalam Bahasa Indonesia tidak dikenal dan ditranslasikan ke 'r' sebagai konsonan dengan pengucapan terdekan: Jadi terjemahannya yang tepat menurut saya adalah : Antartika dan bukan Antarktika. Mohon diperiksa di KBBI penulisannya adalah Antartika. Marfiadi

- Selama beberapa tahun terakhir, desas-desus telah beredar di Jepang tentang keberadaan raksasa bentuk kehidupan humanoid yang menghuni perairan es Antartika. Dilaporkan diamati berkali-kali oleh anggota awak kapal pemerintah yang melakukan “penelitian paus”, ini disebut “Ningen” (lit. “manusia“) dikatakan sepenuhnya berwarna putih dengan panjang sekitar 20 hingga 30 meter. Artikel ini berspekulasi tentang kemungkinan makhluk-makhluk tak dikenal yang menghuni laut selatan, dan ini termasuk screenshot Google Maps yang menunjukkan apa yang tampak seperti Ningen di Samudera Atlantik Selatan di lepas pantai Namibia. Hingga saat ini, tidak ada bukti kuat telah disajikan untuk mengkonfirmasi keberadaan Ningen. Pemerintah diyakini menyimpan catatan detail dari penampakan, tetapi mereka telah merilis tidak ada informasi kepada publik dan telah dilaporkan saksi mata diperintahkan untuk tetap diam.
- Christian Aldea, ilmuwan asal Spanyol, menemukan spesies baru hewan lunak (mollusca) raksasa di Antartika yang kemudian diberi nama Zeidora antartica. Spesies ini ditemukan saat Aldea dan rekan dari Departemen Ekologi dan Zoologi Universitas Vigo, Spanyol, melakukan ekspedisi beberapa waktu lalu.
- Zeidora antartica, meski disebut raksasa, sebenarnya hanya berukuran 14 mm. Disebut raksasa karena ukuran spesies ini tergolong besar dibanding dengan hewan lain yang berada dalam satu genus, yang biasanya hanya berukuran tak lebih dari 5 mm.
- Seperti tertera dalam namanya, spesies ini masuk dalam genus Zeidora. Aldea mengatakan, "Genus ini merupakan grup hewan yang belum banyak dipahami. Grup ini terdiri atas 14 spesies dengan hanya sedikit spesimen yang ditemukan."

- Monster-monster Laut Tertangkap dari Perairan Antartika
- Dari perairan dingin Antartika, para ilmuwan berhasil merekam dan menangkap makhluk-makhluk laut raksasa. Salah satu monster laut itu berbentuk mirip laba-laba laut namun berukuran sebesar piring makan. Seekor ubur-ubur yang memiliki tentakel hingga 6 meter juga ikut ditangkap.
- “Gigantisme sangat biasa di perairan Antartika, kami telah mengumpulkan cacing raksasa, udang raksasa, dan laba-laba laut yang sebesar piring ini,” ujar Martin Riddle, ilmuwan Australia, Selasa (19/2). Banyak di antaranya ikan-ikan yang hidup di kegelapan dan bermata besar sehingga terlihat menakutkan.
- Makhluk-makhluk laut yang misterius itu adalah sebagian dari koleksi yang dikumpulkan para peneliti dari Laut Selatan selama ekspedisi CEAMARC (Collaborative East Antarctic Marine Sensus). Sekitar 25 persen sampel yang dikoleksi diperkirakan baru dalam dunia sains hewan. Masing-masing seberat rata-rata 30 kilogram dan sebagain diambil dari kedalaman antara 200-1400 meter.
- Pengambilan sampel dimaksudkan sebagai sensus kehidupan laut di dekat Kutub Selatan. Para peneliti gabungan dari Jepang, Australia, dan Prancis melakukan ekspedisi dengan tiga kapal ilmiah, masing-masing Aurora Australia, L’Astrolabe milik Prancis, dan Umitaka Maru milik Jepang.
- “Spesimen-spesimen yang dikumpulkan akan dikirim ke universitas-universitas dan museum-museum di sleuruh dunia untuk diidentifikasi, diperiksa jaringannya, dan dikodekan DNA-nya,” ujar Graham Hosie, ketua proyek sensus dari kapal Umitaka Maru. Para ilmuwan menggunakan data-data pengukuran ini untuk menilai perubahan ekosistem laut dalam akibat pemanasan global.

- Hal tersebut diketahui AS sehingga memacu AS untuk mengusulkan agar benua tersebut berada dalam pengawasan PBB. Tetapi, gagasan itu ditolak.
- Pada 1950-an beberapa pejabat AS mulai memberikan tekanan agar Amerika bertindak lebih aktif mengenai Antartika, sebab mereka percaya bahwa benua tersebut memiliki potensi untuk digunakan sebagai lahan pengujian nuklir. Tetapi, Presiden Dwight D Eisenhower mengambil pendekatan yang berbeda.
- Dia malah bekerja sama dengan Uni Soviet untuk mengeluarkan perjanjian yang menjadikan Antartika sebagai zona bebas militer. Perjanjian itu mulai berlaku pada Juni 1961.
