Seni rupa pada Reformasi Protestan dan Kontra-Reformasi
Reformasi Protestan pada abad ke-16 di Eropa hampir sepenuhnya menolak tradisi seni Katolik yang ada, dan sangat sering menghancurkan sebanyak mungkin tradisi tersebut. Sebuah tradisi seni baru berkembang, menghasilkan karya seni dalam jumlah yang jauh lebih sedikit yang mengikuti agenda Protestan dan menyimpang drastis dari tradisi Eropa selatan dan seni humanis yang dihasilkan selama Renaisans Tinggi. Gereja-gereja Lutheran, seiring perkembangannya, menerima peran terbatas untuk karya seni yang lebih besar di gereja-gereja,[1][2] dan juga mendorong penggunaan cetakan dan ilustrasi buku. Kalvinis tetap menentang keras seni di gereja, dan curiga terhadap gambar-gambar kecil bertema agama, meskipun pada umumnya mereka menerima gambar-gambar sekuler di rumah mereka.
