Theodore Robinson (3 Juni 1852 – 2 April 1896) adalah seorang pelukis Amerika yang terkenal karena lanskap Impresionis miliknya. Dia adalah salah satu seniman Amerika pertama yang mengambil Impresionisme di akhir 1880-an, mengunjungi Giverny dan mengembangkan persahabatan dekat dengan Claude Monet. Beberapa karyanya dianggap sebagai mahakarya impressionist Amerika.
Biografi
[sunting | sunting sumber]Robinson lahir di daerah Irasburg, Vermont.[1] Keluarganya pindah ke Evansville, Wisconsin, dan Robinson sempat belajar seni di Chicago. Pada tahun 1874 ia melakukan perjalanan ke New York City untuk menghadiri kelas-kelas di Akademi Desain Nasional dan Liga Mahasiswa Seni.[2]
Pada tahun 1876 ia pergi ke Paris untuk belajar di bawah Carolus-Duran dan di École des Beaux-Arts, dengan Jean-Léon Gérôme.[2] Ia pertama kali memamerkan lukisannya di 1877 Salon di Paris,[2] and spent the summer of that year at Grez-sur-Loing.
Setelah perjalanan ke Venice dan Bologna, ia kembali ke Amerika Serikat pada tahun 1879 selama beberapa tahun. Pada tahun 1881 ia pindah ke sebuah studio di New York dan menjadi pelukis profesional dan guru seni,[3] dan pada tahun yang sama menjadi anggota Society of American Artists.[1] Selama waktu ini Robinson melukis dengan cara realis, disikat longgar tetapi belum impresionistis, sering menggambarkan orang-orang yang terlibat dalam kegiatan domestik atau agraria yang tenang.

Marie, as she was known, was Robinson’s romantic companion and prospective wife. Sadly, the artist died unmarried just four years later at the young age of forty-three.
